Tuesday at Camp Paw Paw

Follow this link to check out all of our photos from this week at Camp Paw Paw! We will be adding new photos throughout the week: https://photos.app.goo.gl/eeufJuhYvHR4LYuG3

Our day started out with helping around the shelter. Some kids gave the feral cats food and water. Throughout the week, campers will be helping to give these three feral cats (Cameron, Aladdin, and Mr. Jingles) food and water. Today there was a Mr. Jingles spotting! Feral cats have a tendency to avoid humans. However, we know that we are keeping them, full, happy, and safe.
Campers also helped to fill peanut butter dog Kongs for the dogs in the shelter. They will be frozen and given to the pups every night as a treat and way to stay entertained. Both feeding the feral cats, and helping with dog Kongs will be continued through the rest of the week.

Several campers used our wonderful supply of paper towel and toilet paper rolls (thank you for your donations!) to make some cat toys. Some were brought home for pets or friends' pets and some were donated to the cats in the Humane Society!

Next, we went to the field to play some games, and have snack before our guest speaker arrived. Elizabeth Berger, from Cats Amazing, came to tell us all about her job. She is a vet and taught us about many of her tools, fun facts about cats, and even brought Rex, a pug mix that she had rescued. Rex was a little guy with a big personality. He was born without the correct join in his front elbows, preventing him from extending his front legs and keeping them locked at an angle. While this definitely does not stop him from getting around, Elizabeth shared with us that it could damage his back over time to walk like this. At 9 months of age, Rex is just about old enough to get a set of wheels, that will allow him to run around and play without putting strain on his back. This probably won't be happening for a few weeks, but if we receive any pictures, we'll be sure to share them so that you can show your campers!

After running around and getting our sillies out with a few games, we had another guest join us: Erin Alamed from the Human Society! She taught us all about what it meant to be a volunteer and shared with us what it took to keep HSCC running and the animals healthy and happy. The kids were blown away by how many volunteers the shelter had and needed in order to ensure that the animals were the happiest they could be and the shelter runs smoothly. Erin brought out a friend, Misty, as well. Misty in a recent intake, due to the cost of her heart worm medication. She was loving the belly rubs and constant attention she got from the campers and she definitely brought some smiles to camp as well!

We wrapped up camp by playing a few games and hanging out with Carmen! Tomorrow will mark our first day of being in charge of feeding Carmen and taking care of her habitat!

We're looking forward to more exciting adventures with your campers tomorrow!
